“Mersin Mut Alahan Monastery”

Architectural Conservation (Documentation, Restitution and Restoration) Project

Mersin, 2009-2010

Alahan Monastery is located near the road connecting Karaman (Laranda) to Mut (Claudiopolis). It is one of the earliest surviving Byzantine monasteries in Anatolia Alahan Monastery which has an important place in Early Christian art and Byzantine architectural history with its unique topographic location on the slopes of the Taurus Mountains. It is one of the most important buildings of its period in terms of its architectural features (plan scheme, facade order, decorations, etc.) and it has been an example for the periods after it. One of the important features of the Alahan monastery is that it sheds light on the dating of similar structures whose history was not known before.
